The Jude Sadovsky Story, Part II: The Gathering Storm

So, Roxanne gave birth to beautiful Jude William Sadovsky.

Then the fun starts. Post-operative infection. It's an ugly thing. Not to mention the endless parade of ice chips and Saltines. But Roxanne soldiers on, and David gets a crash course in wet nursing.

THE LONG HAUL (Hall, get it?) TO RECOVERY - Roxanne stretches against the railing in a hallway adjacent to the maternity ward.

THE FEVER BOARD: where we tallied the daily Fevers and Chills.

Note the slowly declining fever temps. The high score was an astounding 104.1 degrees, but Roxanne got it down far enough that THEY LET US LEAVE -YEAH!

THE NIGHT ATTACK - The second night we're home, a twenty-something man, no doubt a source of great pride to his mother, started kicking in our front door in a drunken fury, capped by falling over on the porch. Though the door is glass from top to bottom, he succeeded only in breaking the plastic trim around the bottom. A few quotes from the police:
"Are you Toby? He's looking for someone named Toby."

"Did you hit him? He's got blood on his face."

"You coulda shot him if you had a gun. I wouldn't blame you."

I was wielding a very substantial and possibly dangerous umbrella stroller in one hand, while holding the door with the other, as Roxanne summoned the constabulary.

THE EXODUS - Ann Victor, via Steven and Bonnie Heller, graciously allowed us to stay at her beautiful home by Cedar Lake for as long as we needed to recover from our latest drama, collect our wits and proceed to the next installment of our adventure.

David and Jude find the couch very relaxing.

And Mom multi-tasks!

Roxanne captured in a modern Madonna and Child (it was the only metaphor I could think of). Ann and Oscar's home is a wonderful and intriguing (all those switches!) place, and will be thoroughly enjoyed by the new owners.

TIME OUT FOR KIDS - We took a break from new-babydom and joined the lively gathering at Steven and Bonnie's for the Becca and Jamon baby naming for little Maya.
(my name spelling may be all over the map, sorry!)

Here, Becca and Roxanne compare features and factory-installed options while a proud father captures it on video. Captured by another proud father.

THE FINAL DESTINATION
Through the wits and wiles of good friend Mike Toohey (proprietor of Michael Realty, the only company for all your real estate needs, private and commercial), we were able to get into our next home early and start nesting, just prior to the BACK TO BACK SNOW EMERGENCIES!

Our faithful steed, Odell, who has managed to surmount all winter obstacles thus far.

The view from Valhalla:

Home sweet home!

This is day two of the second snow emergency, and all cars are properly situated on the "odd" side of the street. Any digression from the prescribed protocol and you find yourself in the city tow lot, where only the best people gather to reclaim their vehicles for astonishingly high prices.

Jude practices his cross-country ski form, even though he can't walk yet. What a competitor!

Jude's wondering what to do, what to do; world domination?, a nice little bicycle repair shop by the lakes?, maybe a graduate degree in advanced quantum mechanics with a little kayaking on the side. Decisions, decisions...

Roxanne is recovering nicely, David has headed back to work at the U, and Jude has gained two pounds and a full inch of brain circumference! And Elton (cat) has stopped hiding in the joist space in the basement of our new home.

Special thanks to Steve and Bonnie Heller, Brian and Naomi Kahn (Ethan Kahn has been bequeathed the belly button scab of our son, at his request), The women of Roxanne's "Hometown Girls" writing group (and Frank and Michael), Susan the shoveller, Michael Toohey, Andrew Sullivan, Nancy Victor, Jen Roba, Joe Erickson, Roy the Mover, Len and Ben Sadoff - medical consultants, the fine folks at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital and Emergency room (ask for Dr. Peterson), and the men and woman of the Minneapolis Police Department, who put their lives on the line every day so that people like Roxanne and myself need not fear drunken idiots who end up on the wrong porch and changed irrevocably the course of the future of people they don't even know, who aren't Toby. And all you good people whose names have temporarily escaped us.

Hey Jude, it's life!

Roxanne and Jude relaxing on Day 2 (maybe, we lost track).
A somewhat medicated Roxanne is wearing her stylish Abbott Northwestern patient gown with the convenient snap-sleeves for easy access by baby.

Judy is stylin' his NICU knit cap in a stunning yellow with racing stripe. Go Team!

Jude gets weighed in on Day 1 after his exciting adventure in alternative birth strategies, posting a hefty 6 pounds, 15.3 ounces. He looks well positioned for the next events involving pooping, sleeping, crying and receiving nutrients from a variety of sources.

Jude made a promising start by "holding it" until he got out, not evacuating his bowels until well clear of the uterus, and avoiding the always troubling miconium.

Yes, we live in the hospital. We three hospital people. Roxanne, David, and our son Jude. We sneek into the empty hospital rooms to sleep at night and steal uneaten food from the trays of sleeping patients who never eat much anyway. Some day we hope to escape to a home of our own, but in the meantime, it's apple juice for all!
